This is a picture of an ancient Greek device that was found in a ship which sank in 80 BC. It is the Antikythera mechanism... it was determined by x-ray methods that this device was able to track and predict solar and lunar eclipses and other celestial happenings. The need to know must have been fairly strong for these folks who built this mechanism.
